SEATTLE, WASH – For more than 100 food- and housing-insecure students in the Tukwila School District, weekends aren’t about sleeping in or hanging out with friends. Weekends mean long, hungry hours until school re-opens and they can again count on receiving wholesome, nourishing meals at school.
To help bridge the gap, the Tukwila School District’s Weekend SnackPack Program provides ready-to-eat single-serving foods to students who qualify for its McKinney-Vento (homeless) assistance program. Inspirus Credit Union – near Westfield Southcenter Mall at 5200 Southcenter Blvd. – has just partnered with Weekend SnackPack as a food dropoff site. A collection bin has been set up in its lobby for non-perishable donations. Doors are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Donation choices include oatmeal packets, individual-serving cereal boxes, juice boxes, canned or pouch-sealed tuna and chicken, ramen soups, instant noodle soups, macaroni and cheese, granola bars, and fruit cups, as well as travel-sized toothbrushes and toothpaste, individually wrapped plastic ware, and sanitizing hand wipes. Due to allergy concerns, all donations should be nut-free.
Inspirus joins three other Weekend SnackPack dropoff sites: Tukwila City Hall, 6300 Building, Southcenter Blvd.; Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave. S.; and Thrift It!, 14404 51st Ave. S.
Inspirus employees also are donating freshly laundered, gently used clothing and packaged new socks and underwear to the district’s McKinney-Vento students.
“Inspirus celebrates the power of education to transform lives,” said President Scott Adkins. “But it’s hard for children to focus on school when they’re wondering ‘What will I eat today?’ or ‘Will I have clean clothes to wear to school on Monday?’ Our partnership with Tukwila’s Weekend SnackPack Program gives our members and the community a convenient way to make a difference for kids who desperately need our help.”
