FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 3, 2015

SEATTLE WASH. Inspirus Credit Union gives $1,500 to the Tukwila School District’s McKinney-Vento Program, supporting students in need.

Roughly 10 percent of students in the Tukwila School District are housing-insecure. At one Tukwila school, the rate is anywhere from 20 to 25 percent, according to Sara Niegowski, communications director for the district.

“It’s hard to even begin to imagine all of the challenges students face when they are homeless or housing insecure,” said Tukwila School District Superintendent, Nancy Coogan. “They are trying to concentrate on learning and education while some of their most basic survival needs are in jeopardy. We are incredibly thankful for this donation from Inspirus–it’s going to give these students a tremendous boost.”

This contribution will go towards funding supplemental programs for the district such as extra tutoring, homework assistance, and language practice.

“I was deeply moved to witness Inspirus prove their commitment to education, and I am thankful for their acknowledgement and support of our McKinney-Vento students,” said Paraeducator and McKinney-Vento Liaison, Jonathan Houston. “This donation will allow us to provide specific academic supplements for them.”

The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that provides funding to homeless shelters. Tukwila School District has its own program to support housing-insecure families within the district. The purpose of this program is to strengthen the quality of lives of those affected.

“There is an overwhelming amount of need in our community,” said President and CEO Scott Adkins. “As a credit union passionate about education, we want students to succeed and have the resources they need to do so. Donations to the McKinney-Vento program are helping students grow and learn inside and outside of the classroom.”
